Listening Resources

In addition to doing your assigned Suzuki and/or Irish listening, I'd love for you to develop a music listening practice of your own choosing.  To help get you started, I've put together this Spotify Playlist of some of my favorite classical music.   I'll update it as we go along, and I'll also be putting together other themed playlists.  Please take some time to explore!

Note: if you don't have access to Spotify, let me know - I may be able to put something similar together on YouTube.

Attending live concerts and music events is one of my favorite activities.  Listed below are some local Saratoga Springs venues and organizations that regularly put on concerts that may be interesting and inspiring to you:

Caffe Lena - MainStage concerts Thurs-Sun plus open mics and other events Mon-Wed

Crandall Library Folklife Center, Glens Falls - free concert series in the fall & spring

Flurry Festival - a festival of traditional dancing & music held every February

Saratoga Arts Center - occasional events & hosts First Night

Saratoga Chamber Players - presents chamber music concerts thought the year

Saratoga Library - various programs including Artists in Action

Skidmore - concerts featuring students, faculty, and internationally renowned musicians

SPAC - check out their expanded year round programing

Spring Street Gallery - hosts occasional concerts

The Studio in Greenfield - hosts occasional concerts

BLOG: MUSINGS ON MUSIC

Musings on Music #2

I learned a tune yesterday!

"What," I hear you think, "don't you do that every day, or at least every week?"

In fact, sadly, no.  I rarely take time to learn tunes for the fun of it.  What a shame!

  • NEW: tune of the month club

IF WE'VE EVER TALKED ABOUT OR PLAYED MUSIC TOGETHER, YOU KNOW THAT I LOVE TO LEARN NEW TUNES AND SHARE THEM WITH FRIENDS.

During these days of staying at home, I've been thinking of ways to continue to share music, from a distance, with friends, family and people I have yet to meet.

I invite you to join my Tune of the Month Club, a place to gather and share our love of Irish dance tunes and other related fiddle music.  Let's stay connected through music!

Join as a Listener: each month you will receive a video of me playing the selected tune.

Join as a Learner: each month you will receive a video of me teaching the tune (broken down phrase by phrase, using multiple camera angels), a PDF with the musical notation, as well as the Listener video.

My specialty is Irish dance music, so that will be my focus with this club, but I invite you to join me as I delve into related fiddle traditions along the way.

Your monthly support will help me to spend the time to choose, learn, and perfect these tunes, as well as filming, editing, and notating.

Thank you for considering joining - I think it's going to be a lot of fun, and I truly appreciate your support!

Suzuki Violin Lessons

Known as the Mother Tongue Method, the Suzuki Method aims to create an immersion program to help young children learn music.

Emphasis is on learning by ear (including listening to music at home), working incrementally to develop physical control, and producing a beautiful tone.

Ultimately, my goal as a teacher is to encourage joyful musicians who develop into wonderful people.

Parental involvement is an essential part of lesson and home practicing success.  Parents are encouraged to study along with the child.

The Suzuki program includes weekly private lessons, bi-weekly group classes, and many opportunities for performance.
